I have reviewed thousands of resumes and the ones that instantly stand out are those that show deep expertise and a history of success in the target field.  Employers want candidates who can immediately make a difference and contribute from day 1.  So they seek people who can demonstrate proficiency in specific skill sets.  When you apply to a job think a bit about the skills being demanded and whether there is at least a 70% match between your skills and those required in the job.
