Searching for a new job is strenuous. Oftentimes it becomes a full-time job in addition to the one you already have. So its important to go about your search efficiently, which essentially means having clarity and focus.
I confess I wasn’t super diligent in this area myself during my corporate life, but since the start of Talent Junction, I’ve had a chance to think more deeply about this topic.
First and foremost, be clear about your career goals and answer questions such as: why are you searching for a job at this point? What do you ideally want to accomplish in next few years that is not possible in your current job? What type of industries and companies are best suited for your education, skills, work experience and personal goals? The last point “personal goals” appears a bit hazy, so here’s an example. A person having worked only in big corporates may want to join a well-placed startup as a step towards his/her goal of joining a private equity firm – that would qualify as a personal goal.
In short, plan before you execute.
Clarity on these points, will help you write a truly effective resume and show your passion in interviews – two critical ingredients for success in your job search.
